Russell Van Horn, Ph.D.
Senior Researcher
Dr. Russ Van Horn is a senior researcher in the Applied Animal Ecology Division. He joined CRES in 2006, where his primary focus is on conservation research for Andean bears, utilizing his background in behavioral ecology and genetics. He’s interested in the conservation implications of behavior, ecology, and evolution. Dr. Van Horn has worked in the field and lab for various governmental agencies, and in both the U.S. and Kenya. In the past, he’s been part of field projects focused on spotted hyenas, elk and bison, tree squirrels, small mammals, prairie raptors, and forest birds in central North America.
Dr. Van Horn received his Ph.D. in zoology and ecology, evolutionary biology, and behavior from Michigan State University, his M.S. in fisheries and wildlife management from Montana State University (Bozeman), and his B.S. in fisheries and wildlife management from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities).
