Bethan Morgan, Ph.D.
Head of Central Africa Regional Program
Dr. Morgan is head of the CRES Central Africa Regional Program, based in Cameroon, Central Africa. Prior to this position, she was a Conservation Research Postdoctoral Fellow. During her time with CRES, she has been actively involved with all aspects of management and fieldwork, particularly establishing a field station in the Ebo forest, Cameroon, and conducting extensive surveys of the forests in southwestern Cameroon for drills, chimpanzees, and forest elephants.
Dr. Morgan received her Ph.D. in 2000 from the University of Cambridge. Her thesis, entitled “Ecology of mammalian frugivores in the Reserve de Faune du Petit Loango, Gabon,” investigated niche separation in relation to frugivory in large-bodied mammalian frugivores, particularly forest elephants, gorillas, and chimpanzees in the reserve.
Before coming to work for the Zoological Society of San Diego, Dr. Morgan was a visiting and teaching fellow in Biological Anthropology at Harvard University where she earned an Excellence in Teaching award. She has also been an assistant lecturer, supervisor, and examiner for the University of Cambridge’s Department of Biological Anthropology. She is a member of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Primate Specialist Group (Section for Great Apes).
