The San Diego Zoo's Conservation and Research for Endangered Species: Projects

Northern Bahamas Iguana Project

Chuck Knapp, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at CRES, established this project while working on his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and now continues in collaboration with CRES. Prior work involved a detailed study of a previously established translocated population, distribution and ecology of iguanas in the Exumas Island chain, establishment of a new translocated population in the Exumas, and a detailed ecological study of iguana populations on Andros Island.

Future work will include continued monitoring of iguana populations on Andros and in the Exumas, dietary studies to assess the impacts of tourists feeding iguanas, a comparison of translocated population growth rates on islands with and without rats, and implementation of the Andros Iguana Conservation and Management Plan.
