Learning from Nature’s Best Technologies:
An Introduction to Biomimicry

Please join us for a stimulating evening focused on the exciting new discipline of biomimicry, hosted by the San Diego Zoo. Dayna Baumeister of the Biomimicry Guild will demonstrate technological and commercial applications that arise when inquisitive humans ask nature for solutions to complex design challenges. Present-day applications of biomimicry include:

• Energy efficient buildings designed after termite mounds
• Super-efficient wind turbines modeled on the fins of humpback whales
• Wetsuits worn by Olympic medalists imitating the texture of sharkskin
• Antibiotics which do not result in resistant bacteria, based on the defenses of red seaweed
• Lightweight building materials based on the structure of an abalone shell

Fabulous unique images of nature coupled with their bio-inspired technologies tell the story of a world in which humans fit in with the environment, meeting our functional needs while simultaneously creating conditions conducive for all life.

Ms. Baumeister will also talk about efforts locally and worldwide to further the practice of biomimicry, introducing opportunities for individuals and organizations from education, business, engineering, architecture, biology, and other fields to get involved in making our world a more sustainable and healthier place.
